Revitalise Your Muscles: Understanding Motor Point Acupuncture & Dry Needling

If you are struggling with persistent pain, stiffness, or limited movement, the root cause may involve an imbalance in your muscles. They are either working too hard and staying tight, or they have switched off and become too weak.

At our clinic, as well as using Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture principles to address clients’ issues, I may use other more targeted techniques like Motor Point Acupuncture (MPA) and Dry Needling to reset your muscles, relieve discomfort, and restore your natural freedom of movement.

What is Motor Point Acupuncture (MPA)?

Motor Point Acupuncture is a modern, highly effective style of acupuncture that bridges traditional wisdom with sports medicine.

  • The Science: A “motor point” is the exact location where a nerve enters a muscle to make it move. Many of these points align perfectly with traditional acupuncture points that have been used successfully for thousands of years.

  • How it Works: We apply a very gentle, comfortable electro-stimulation to the acupuncture needles.

  • The Result: This stimulation acts like a reset switch. It “wakes up” weak, underactive muscles and coaxes chronically tight muscles to finally let go. By restoring the muscle’s correct length and elasticity, your body can function at its optimal level.

Relief for Nerve Pain & Neurological Issues

When muscles are chronically tight or dysfunctional, they can compress nearby nerves. This often leads to frustrating symptoms like burning, tingling, pins and needles, or numbness. By precisely targeting and releasing the problematic muscle, MPA removes that pressure, restores nerve function, and eases discomfort.

Conditions MPA can help manage include:

  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Jaw pain (TMJ)
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow/Golfer’s elbow
  • Hip pain
  • Knee issues
  • Sciatica and nerve pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Recovery from surgery

What is Dry Needling?

While MPA focuses on the nerve-to-muscle connection, dry needling specifically targets stubborn, painful knots within the muscle tissue itself.

During treatment, an acupuncture needle is gently inserted directly into the tight knot. Using light manual stimulation, we trigger a brief “twitch response” from the muscle. This instant release allows fresh blood to rush to the area, delivering immediate relief from pain and tightness.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

These therapies are powerful, and it is completely normal to feel your body responding over the next day or two.

  • Muscle Soreness: You may feel some mild muscle soreness, similar to the feeling after a good workout at the gym. This typically fades within 24 hours (though it may last a little longer for mature clients).

  • Temporary Tiredness: Feeling a bit tired after a session is a very normal sign that your body is relaxing and healing.

  • Immediate Benefits: Despite some temporary soreness, most clients notice an almost instant improvement in their range of motion and flexibility.
