Honey Quibulue and Marina Rados, therapists at Cammeray Massage, have compiled some frequently asked questions and answers for those seeking pregnancy massage treatment.
Here's our list of FAQs for pregnancy massage.
Is massage safe during pregnancy?
Yes, unless advised by your GP or another health practitioner (in cases of high risk pregnancies, for example). There is no evidence that massage can be harmful for you or your baby in normal circumstances.
We advise consulting a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with experience treating pregnancy clients such as Honey, Mika and Marina at Cammeray Massage.

How will massage help my stress levels and/or anxiety during pregnancy?
Massage generally lowers cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone, and increases the production of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which have mood-boosting and pain-relieving effects. Therefore, massage can have a calming effect on the nervous system,
It can also help reduce physical discomfort and tension as well as improve sleep. All of which will aid in easing stress and anxiety during pregnancy.
I'm really pregnant. How do I lay on the table with my big belly?
We have specific pregnancy cushions and pillows that allow you to lay face down in most cases. Or you could be side lying or sitting up depending on your preference, the area to be worked on, and your comfort.
Your doctor will advise you if there are particular positions to avoid, but the therapists will guide you through this.

I've heard some essential oils are unsafe during massage. Is this true?
Due to the potency of some essential oils and the unknown effects on mother and baby during the pregnancy process, it is often advised against their use during a massage treatment.
However, it is safe to use unscented oils as we do.
Can massage assist me after I give birth?
Yes! Post-natal and beyond, massage is of great benefit and comfort to new mums.
The adjustment to parenthood can include many changes including; varied emotions, exhaustion, demands on time, sleep deprivation, and more. These obviously can add to stress and anxiety levels.
A post-natal massage can help reduce the level of stress and anxiety.
Not to mention the effect of the extra loads on the body structure, such as; breast feeding (shoulder & neck tension), lifting/bending (low back), pram management (arms/shoulders/legs).
These challenges can all benefit greatly from massage & body work.
